Microclover: The Eco-Friendly, Low-Maintenance Ground Cover for Beautiful, Resilient Lawns

Transform your lawn with Microclover, a hybrid miniature version of Dutch White Clover, designed for lush, low-maintenance landscapes. Originally developed for golf courses, Microclover provides a beautiful, even green ground cover that’s perfect for lawns, gardens, and container gardening. This clover variety requires minimal upkeep, delivering a steady nitrogen supply, controlling erosion, and naturally suppressing weeds with deep roots.

Why Choose Microclover?

Ideal for spring lawn renovations, Microclover thrives in various settings, from home lawns to large-scale landscapes. It’s a popular cover crop in hemp fields, orchards, and other agricultural applications due to its low height, compact leaf size, and uniform growth pattern, blending seamlessly with grasses without clumping or appearing weedy.

Key Benefits:

  • Water Efficient: Requires up to 25% less water than conventional lawns, making it drought-friendly.
  • Blends with Grass: Coexists well in lawn mixes without overtaking grasses.
  • Low-Maintenance Mowing: Tolerates regular mowing but requires less frequent cuts than traditional lawns.
  • Erosion Control & Weed Suppression: Deep roots stabilize soil and inhibit weed growth.
  • Natural Nitrogen Supply: Continuously enriches soil with nitrogen, reducing the need for fertilizers.
  • Traffic Tolerant & Disease Resistant: Withstands foot traffic and resists common lawn diseases.
  • Non-GMO & Hardy to Zone 3: Conventionally bred and adaptable to a range of climates.

Planting Tips:

For best results, plant when outside temperatures are between 60–75°F and soil temperatures range from 50–65°F. Ensure sufficient soil moisture, especially in the forecasted days after planting. For successful germination, avoid planting in soils below 50°F, as seeds may remain dormant.

I should have ordered more seeds. We’ll see how these grow this summer and reseed in the fall.

Hello Jayme, thank you so much for the 5-star review!

Microclover is a fantastic choice for a lush, low-maintenance, and naturally green ground cover that will look great between your rocks once established. Thank you for the picture! Planning ahead to reseed in the fall is an excellent strategy, the cooler autumn temperatures and consistent moisture provide ideal conditions for the clover to establish deeply before winter. If you need any help calculating exactly how much seed you'll need to finish up the project this fall, we are always here to help!

We truly appreciate your business and support. Have a wonderful day and a fantastic growing season! 🙌

I have high hopes for this clover in my backyard (which gets absolutely hammered by the sun in the summer)! It has sprouted & I have my finger's X'd that it fills in.

Thank you for the review, Kate! We’re so excited to hear that your microclover has sprouted and is off to a good start.

To help it fill in those areas that get hammered by the sun, make sure to keep it consistently watered through the establishment phase. Once it is fully established, you can then begin to reduce the frequency of watering. We have high hopes for your backyard as well!

This is the second time I ordered microclover as a replacement for my back lawn. It is thick and green, requires less mowing and watering. It is more pet-resistant than grass. Because it is so thick, it seems to choke out weeds. I recommend it.

Hello Susan, thank you so much for the wonderful review and for choosing us a second time!

We are thrilled to hear how successful your back lawn replacement has been. You perfectly highlighted exactly why Microclover is such an incredible option offering a thick, vibrant green look while naturally choking out weeds and requiring significantly less water and mowing. Knowing that it’s holding up beautifully against pet traffic is the icing on the cake!

We truly appreciate your continued business and your recommendation. Have a fantastic growing season! 🙌

Looking for a lawn alternative I read about microclover and decided to give this a try. Just planted it by using a pepper shaker as the seeds are super small. I am anxiously awaiting its germination so it's too early to tell....

Thank you for giving our Microclover a try and for sharing your experience! Those seeds are definitely tiny, so the pepper shaker method was a creative way to help with even application. We completely understand the excitement of waiting for germination, and we hope you start seeing those little seedlings pop up soon. Thanks again for choosing Rocky Mountain BioAg®, we’re excited to be part of your lawn alternative journey!

Just a quick note. I haven't planted the Microclover, yet, due to snow blocking me out until this coming Spring, but the seeds arrived quickly.

Thank you for taking a moment to share your experience! We’re glad to hear your Microclover arrived quickly, even if winter decided to hit the pause button on planting season. ❄️

When spring opens the door again, you’re going to love how Microclover transforms your lawn with resilience, color, and low-maintenance beauty. If you need any tips before planting or want help planning your spring strategy, we’re always here for you.

I thought I would have to wait until spring to see the clover, but it has already begun covering my hillside. :-)

That’s awesome! We’re so glad to hear your Microclover is already taking off. It’s always exciting to see green coverage come to life faster than expected. Thanks for sharing your results and for choosing Rocky Mountain BioAg®, we appreciate you!

We absolutely loved the microclover, but it has turned into regular clover - possibly due to the fact that we have never mowed it - which we also love. We seeded it last October and it came in so beautifully in the spring. We only gave it about 3 days of watering total over the summer and it mostly made it through just fine. We are in Bellingham, WA.

Thank you for sharing your experience from Bellingham! You’re absolutely right microclover will stay ‘micro’ when it’s mowed regularly, but if left to grow, it can take on the look of traditional clover. It sounds like your stand has done wonderfully since last fall, especially with so little watering through the summer that’s a true testament to its resilience! We’re glad you’re enjoying it in both forms, and we appreciate you highlighting this for other growers considering microclover.

Seeds sprout fast!

I purchased this clover in hopes of covering some barren spots in my grass, and stop the soil erosion. I’m seeing sprouts 2 days after spreading! I’m very happy with the results, and I’m seeing sprouts in every spot I spread seeds. I will definitely be buying some more to fill in other bare areas.

Super Micro clover

Sprouting very well at day 3 to 4. Everywhere I sowed the micro clover it is sprouting. So happy to be able to control some of the erosion caused by multiple tree loss and wash from Helene. Black Mountain and Swannanoa were hit pretty hard. But yet with this crazy clay soil the clover is sprouting so beautifully!! Thank you!

We’re thrilled to hear your Microclover is already popping up—even in that sticky clay and after Helene’s washouts! :seedling: Its quick germination and deep‐rooted habit make it perfect for stabilizing slopes and rebuilding soil structure, so it’s great to know it’s doing its job around Black Mountain and Swannanoa.

Thanks for sharing your results—your success stories inspire other growers facing similar erosion challenges. If you snap any progress photos, we’d love to see them! And if you need tips on care or overseeding as the stand fills in, just let us know. We’re here to help every step of the way.

Happy growing,

Microclover grew where grass would not

Grass would not grow under the deck and next to the hot tub at our Zone 5b lakeside cabin. I planted RMBA microclover seed in March and by June we had a lush green lawn. Soft as can be on bare feet. We get so many compliments!

Thank you for sharing your success story! :seedling: We love hearing that our Microclover transformed those challenging, under‑deck and hot‑tub spots into a lush, barefoot‑soft lawn—and in just one month. Your experience in Zone 5b is a perfect example of how Microclover thrives where traditional grass struggles. Enjoy the compliments, and let us know if you ever need tips to keep that beautiful green carpet looking its best. Happy growing!

So far , so good!

So far so good, shipped quickly, and sprouted quickly! Been several weeks and hard to tell if it’s grown much since sprouting but anxious for it to all fill in!

Thank you so much for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear your microclover sprouted quickly and that shipping met your expectations. It’s normal for growth to seem a bit slow at first—microclover focuses on root development early on before it really starts to spread and fill in. With a little time, sunshine, and moisture, you should start seeing that lush carpet effect. We're excited for your lawn transformation and here if you have any questions along the way! :seedling::green_heart:

Cannot say enough good things about Rocky Mountain BioAg and DLF microclover. I’ve grown this seed successfully before on Flathead Lake in zone 5b. We could not grow grass under our deck next to the hot tub because it was too shady. But this stuff thrives there! It sprouted fully within 2 weeks with 5-6 hours of morning sun. We seeded in early spring and warered 2x/day for 20 minutes. Within 6 weeks of planting the clover was lush and so green. Its super soft to walk on even barefoot. Trying again in the Eastern Montana plains in a shady front before the trees leaf out. Using the same watering schedule, already have several dozen sprouts after just 3 days. Bith times I planted in compost over topsoil. Be sure to call Brandon at Rocky Mountain BioAg if you have any questions. Hes so helpful! He recommended freezing the seed overnight before planting because it needs to stratify. Worked like a charm!
